Hello fellow people!  I’m Max Merkle.  I come from a long line of casual photographers and have been practicing my art of matter-of-fact-captures for as far back as I can remember.  Recently I’ve been more consciously involved in the process of making photos.  I’m really finding joy in seeking out things to make into photos.  As such, most of what I seek out has a humorous or positive feel to it, because that’s what I like to spend time considering.  That’s my relationship with photographs.  I spend time staring at them and studying them.  I build an emotional connection to them and come back to them to try to relive that connection.  My long term goal with photography is to have a life-long relationship with it.  In the short term, I’d like to continue my weekly blog posts (maxmerkle.com).  I’d also like to complete yearly reviews of my own stuff, and make photo-books of my favorite stuff at the year’s end.

Max, I love the first picture! It reminds me of the work of dutch photographer Erwin Olaf. You should check him out. Did you stage the setting, or did capture a spontaneous moment?

Thank you very much!  The look of the booth was really neat in the dim light.  I waited around for a while when I would notice people going in trying to get one coming out or a shot through the half-closed curtain.  More shots=better luck, right!

I second that the first photo is the most ‘open’ photo of the group. I love the flick of the wrist and the text adds to the story.

The third photo for me also has potential because of the mood–but I wish the environment added to the central subject on the left. If it doesn’t, a reframe of the central subject would be a cleaner/more powerful photo.

The first one is the most interesting for me. Also I like the contrast between the color of the dress and the courtain

Hi max the red shot is my favorite. Try to capture more drama and sex in your photos. Stick to color, you got this.

😉 Thanks, Man!  Interesting you should suggest sticking to color, as I’m on a B/W binge at the moment (with darkroom a dark-room class this weekend, even!).

The first shot is glorious, love the red and the mystery.  I like the color a lot more than the black and white.  Keep at it man you have a good eye!
