If you are not familiar, X70 is 3 years old small premium compact camera from Fuji with 28mm fixed lens and 16MP APSC sensor. It has solid metal body with dial controls for aperture/ss etc., very good integrated flesh, tilt/touch screen (and you can attach strap!). It is in the class with GRII and new XF10 – definitively the smallest and best professional cameras for SP. But I still prefer X70, and here is why:
1. Tilt/touch screen
For me, tilt screen is best option to be unnoticeable and discrete on street or in places where is difficult/forbidden to shoot (like malls). You can hold camera in one hand, easily frame and shoot with one finger. When camera doesn’t have VF I think it should have tilt screen, and Fuji make downgrade from X70 to XF10 by removing it. Also new GRIII will not have tilt screen. Until then I will use X70.
2. Dial controls
I shoot with prefocus on 2.5m on f8 and everything is in focus, my ISO is set to 400-6400 with max ss 400 (and X70 make adjustments). When I shoot at night (or indoor) I set f2.8 or f4 and ISO 1600-6400. Fuji works well with high ISO. We as professional shooters we need camera with dial controls so we can easily change and see it values instead of searching through small screen and navigating through menu to change it. This option is not available on GRII and XF10, and because we preset most of the values this maybe is not big think but for me is very good and practical and I use it same controls on X100F.
3. Other stuffs missing on XF10
XF10 should be upgrade on X70, but Fuji made bad decision to downgrade X70 and to produce cheap camera. Except better 24MP sensor, and maybe better autofocus (which is not interesting to me because I prefocus and 28mm lens have deep depth of field), they remove tilt screen (which is several screws), external flash hot-sue, dial controls and even you cant attach strap (only wrist strap). Maybe is funny but most of the time I use strap when I’m shooting, while I’m making pauses, while I’m walking.
For lazy shooting GRII and XF10 are ok, but I’m talking about “advanced” Winogrand style of SP shooting when you need to take up to 300 photos per hour in a busy place unnoticed and discrete. And experimenting with different cameras I found tilt/touch screen as best option (even if someone see you they think you adjust your camera and click on the screen).
Sony RX100 is also small camera with titl screen but I try it and I cant use it because it has too large (long) lens (it is zoom camera) and smaller sensor with worst quality. Although I have X100F (a little bigger and heavier), I found X70 better because is smaller to take always with me, have 28mm lens and tilt screen. I use X100F for more lazy shooting (at home, in places where you don’t need to take spontaneous images, landscape etc.).
This is my style of shooting and I hope my experience will help you and give you ideas to try and find more practical way of shooting.
