Why do you make photos?

Hello Eric and everyone!

I started to have love for photography when I was still in college. I was taking pictures of my classmates and capturing moments with my cellphone with 2 mega pixel camera(Nokia n70). And just yesterday(literally yesterday!) I found an old photos of my mom, uncles, grandmas, grandpa, sister, and me. And I thought it’s amazing and it brought smile to my face. That’s how I started making photos and that’s why I will still keep making photos.

I make photos because it’s one of the moments in which I really feel myself.

I make photos because there is no pressure, no anxiety.

I make photos because I focus on my freedom and spontaneity.

I make photos because to me it represents: unfiltered thoughts, happiness, freedom to choose.

I make photos to learn from myself, from my mistakes.

I make photos to let other people understand me without words.

Taking photos is a way to face and conquer my fears, capturing people emotions and their soul and create a deep connection and feel empathy.
But also it’s a way to learn about myself, it’s self meditation, it’s a way to forget my problems and lose myself in shooting.

I think taking photos makes me slow down and feel the moment and to see the world around me  differently.  It motivates me to go somewhere, and even when I am stopped somewhere, I can find reasons of being patient — to observe and feel where I am, which turns me into enjoying every moment of life.  I think my love of photography has brought out a better me and relates my existence to my surroundings.

I’m retired and for me it’s pure therapy. The best part is to add a little story to the picture, but it’s hard!

That’s the hard part indeed…I guess the only way to improve in that is to keep trying…let’s keep trying…

I make photographs to remind myself that life is more than it seems; that we do not need to see the world the way in which we are told.

I shoot because growing up my family didn’t take a lot of pictures.  After very close people in my family passing away and not having any photo’s of them or very few.  I wanted to document my family and life more.  I started a project for my wife La’Cree and my dog Otis

Also, shooting allows me to express myself creatively. I want to touch as many people as I can with my artwork.  So that’s why I photograph

Sometimes our memory is fading away…we are just humans. The photos I take, or most exactly I have started to make, are like markers of my life. They will help me to remember people and places; somehow, my photos will help me to write with images the story of my life.

Making photos is like fighting against my fading memory…The photos help me to remember who I was, and the roads that I have traveled; my photos are like the book of my life,…, with no words…

Seems like a lot of people takes photos to deal with everyday life and fighting stress. Mine is the same but there’s another personal reason. I’m not a sociable person, sometimes I’m even misanthropic (I work as a shop vendor, and I deal with a lot of people that wants to treat you as a scumbag), so, I do street for studying humans, their behaviours, reactions, and somewhat to try to understand them. I’ve learned a lot, good and bad things. It will not change me, but it’s a chance to learn something everyday and to portray people as I see them. That is, my personal vision of society and humans…at least, in my country, of course.

I began shooting photos as a photographer when I was riding bmx bikes around Las Vegas with my five friends.. now we’ve all parted ways, and now I use photography as a tool now to bring my creative needs to life visually. I use lightroom to cope with late night sadness.

Because I can’t help myself.

I make images to tell stories, to document things that may never be seen again, to relieve the burden of life. When the camera is up to my eye, the rest of the world turns off, I become part of the scene before me and stress disappears.

I love the darkroom, because like Gene Smith (one of my biggest influences) I can control the image to tell the story I want to tell.
