The Dark Art

Just a few thoughts I would like to share with you on the dark art of flash street photography, I know it’s not for everyone, and being a normally shy type of person it’s surprising I find myself increasingly drawn to this in your face and aggressive style of street. I find it addictive, and love the vibrancy and drama that flash gives, people often ask “but don’t they get angry” sometimes yes, but not very often, out of the hundreds of shots I have taken using flash I can count on one hand the number of people that have confronted me about it. In fact I’m constantly amazed every time I go out how few people do react in a negative way. However, if you practice this type of street you must accept and be prepared for a few confrontations every now and again.

Anyway, below are a few examples of my work, would love to here your thoughts and attitudes.

Great forum Eric, and thanks for creating it.

This is ‘dark art’ I wish to be enlightened about.

Are hand holding the flash usually? or off the camera?

Yes I usually hand hold the flash on a wireless trigger. For those interested the shots above were all taken with a Leica M8, and Nissin i40 flashgun.

You don’t need an expensive flash, it depends what you are going to use it for, for street you are going to be close, so a high GN is not necessary, just make sure it has full manual control and wireless flash capability.
