Tattoos, Saigon

Shot in a black room with a Ricoh GRII and the on camera flash.

Tattoos are still quite taboo here in Vietnam but there’s a growing acceptance/interest (with an annual convention now running the last three years or so.)

More and more shops are opening up each month here in Saigon and more and more young people are sporting tattoos openly.

Really fucking cool. Idea, do self portrait of your own tattoos

Self-portraits are my nightmare haha. But thanks!

Amazing shot Ryan. I like the contrasty edit, how’d you do that? I’m experimenting with asking people in the street here in China when I see an interesting one but I’ve had mixed results in part due to feeling a bit anxious asking to shoot something so intimate, but I’ll keep at it.

Hey man, thank you very much.

Street tattoos can be difficult, especially in Asia. I have a full sleeve so I find the tattooed people I shoot tend to ask me to take their pic. They will admire mine, show me theirs (sounds bad haha) and then I’ll get the pic.

Other times they will tell me to get lost. It all depends.

As for the edit, I used VSCO’s Tri-X 400 preset then adjusted my exposure, highlights etc in RAW. Then in photoshop I dodge and burn and work with layers (an overlay layer at 10% or so and adjusted for taste can give nice contrast to B&W)
