That was pretty cool. I’m not used to staying out all day/night shooting, so it took some self coaxing to keep going. I only got told off once though, (well, literally pushed down the sidewalk, telling me “gangs run this street, they don’t want you around, cop or not.”. That was a little weird, as it’s Portland. Anyway.
I got a little bored with my hood, and I wasn’t really turning up anything super exciting, so I headed across town to photograph an underground bike race with some friends. After that I tried to push it and headed back downtown for later than I’m normally awake, but was just drained. Late the next day I got all but one of my best shots. I think the one that I took that actually ended up winning the “Portlandia” category (!) Was one taken just a few shots before I had to call it and start editing.
The judging was all done live. It was pretty brutal for the most part for those that made the final few cut. Prior to that they would just go down the line and say yes/no and vote them into a final group. All but one of mine missed any sort of in depth discussion. It was super cool though, you don’t really get to see that side of a selection process anywhere else I’m aware of.
I’m not sure of when they plan to put something up online. Pro-photo supply had an Instagram post. I guess there’s also a gallery showing of a bunch of the photos early next year that one of the sponsors will put on.
I would probably do it again.
