Nice blog post, thanks for the share. I’m so glad I found Erik’s blog just as I was getting back into photography. It made me stop and think. In short I’d seen some re-prints of my brother in laws Kodachrome from the early 80’s and thought wow I gotta get hold of some of that. Then, my favourite image from last years Taylor-Wessing Portrait Prize was shot on a Mamiya 7ii, so I’m like great! It’s portable and medium format, two itches scratched with one camera! In the end I reigned myself in and did the 5 why’s of what I needed opposed what I wanted.

It boiled down to my ‘every day carry’ being a Fuji X series, and (finally) investing decent glass for my partners still very capable SLR.

The other thing I had to deal with was finally putting away the feeling of somehow cheating by using post processing and realising its just another tool or process method, and is just as valid as when I was taught to burn and shadow images in the darkroom on work experience 25 years ago.

Thanks for your reply! It was hard for me narrowing down as well. How was the Mamiya? I shot with the fuji xt-1 for a day, great camera

I held off on the 7ii, and I’m glad I did, its a lot of money for plastic rangefinder, then there’s setting up for medium format developing and printing…
