I would agree with what Stansworth is writing. In fact, I don’t identify as a “street photographer” any more. I tend to identify myself as a “cheap hack who is trying to learn and maybe communicate how I see the world to the rest of the world via photographs”.

Theres much less photojournalism in the mainstream print than 20 or 40 years ago. But theres a lot of people enthusiastic about making pictures who could have found work great and small in the picture press of the past. Street maybe filled the vacuum in recent times?

Do street photographers do macros of flowers and bugs, birds of prey swooping across lakes, sports telephoto? I think we are a different kind of photographer. We overlap with travel and fashion though.

im more into photography made in the streets than street photography. Street photography can too often be about conforming to visual cues , pictures selected to conform to a sort of group think approval … thise pretentious curated photosharing groups “hardcore” or “real” street photography. Martin Parrs website has a piece on cliches, and street is listed as one kind of cliche.

From what ive seen Gilden has a stand out body of documentary work on and off the streets, and his equally respected for his original approach to street candids portraiture..and has very much his own philosophy about that. Maybe street needs to evolve further to gain more depth more stature..needs to be about something more than eclectic sets of otherwise unconnected events. Needs to be about a project or subject beyond the superficial. At present it seems more like the aimless hipster orphan of photojournalism and art cinema//

Similar perhaps, in that by the time it’s labelled, it’s jumped the shark.
